Newly Gelded

Boss was surrendered to us the first week of July 2024. We had him gelded at Myhre Equine Clinic and he came to us a few days later.

​

Boss is very sweet and it's clear he wants to be loved but isn't quite sure on how to receive all that love we want to shower him in. So far he enjoys ear scratches, and to be petted all over his face, neck, withers and back. He is about 52" at the withers give or take and is a medium sized standard donkey. He is very long legged.

​Boss will need to go to a home with another young gelding that he can be friends with and learn how to be a donkey with.  Boss was gelded late which means he will most likely want to tear it up with another gelding.

Bonded Hinnies 

These two cuties arrived the first week of June 2024, Here's what we know so far..

​

Harry & Sally have previously gotten along with all, they have been pastured with all sorts of farm animals in their previous home and never had any issues.

​

Harry is approx. 20 years old and has some dental issues that come with age. Sally is prone to laminitis and needs to be on limited grass/hay. Sally does very well on a pasture paradise style track, or on a dry lot. 

​

The two of them can still at times be on the shy side but can be easily haltered when presented peanuts or other good treats. They can be handled for everything and are also good with hoof trims

​

Bucky

Bucky is a pony mule who stands a 'mighty' 11  hands tall. Bucky is back to the rescue due to no fault of his own. Bucky gets along great with all equines, but especially loves horses. In the past he has bonded very strongly to mares. We would love to find him a home with at least one other horse or mule to keep him company. Bucky is struggling right now with separation anxiety. 

​

Bucky is still good for the farrier as long as the farrier knows mules and donkeys, Bucky does great with a gentle and paitent farrier who takes his time, Bucky does best when offered breaks and treats as rewards during the trim.

​

Bucky has been good for the vet in the past as long as they are patient and go slow. 

​

Bonded Pair 

Markus and Lucy are a bonded pair. Markus is a donkey and Lucy is a mule.

​

These two have been together in the same home for the last 15 years and must be adopted together. They were very loved in their previous home and were not surrendered for lack of love or care. Both animals are estimated to be roughly 20 years young.

​

Lucy is a beautiful appaloosa pony mule who is on the shy side but is easy to "catch" and halter. She does have cushings disease but it is easily managed with herbal supplements she gets in her daily mineral supplement and Timothy pellets for breakfast and dinner.

​

Markus is a total love bug, He has an incredibly fluffy, soft coat. His favorite thing is ear scratches and loves to be brushed. He has the personality of a Labrador! Markus does have some health issues however. He does appear to have very low hocks on his front legs that we assume is DSL. There is no treatment for this besides providing comfort and support for their legs and feet. Markus is sound hoof wise and does take full advantage of the deep sand bed to lay down and rest his old bones. Markus also has a "lump" by his shoulder that is not getting bigger or smaller. At his age we are providing him the vet care and all the comfort he needs to be happy and healthy.

Jolene and Lucille are a mother and daughter pair. They are both large standard donkeys. 

​

Jolene (left)  is the mother of Lucille (right), she has a very laid back quiet personality. She can be shy at first to strangers but warms up quickly, especially if you have treats. Jolene is roughly 7 years old. She has been shy for being haltered and handled but has been doing great in her training and is learning to self halter. She had extremely over grown hooves when she first arrived to us but has since been trimmed, she did have some light sedation to help ease any anxiety or discomfort. She was so well behaved we do not believe she will need any sedation after a few more trims with us.

​

Lucille is 2 years old. She is extremely sweet and is the extrovert of the pair. She will follow you around to the ends of the earth if she believes you have an extra treat hiding in your pocket. She is also still nervous with handling but not due to abuse but from lack of human interaction. She was very wary of anyone near her body when she first arrived but has since been letting us pet all down her back. She was a tad nervous for her trim but does not have a mean bone in her body, much like her mother. She is just a baby, and has lots of baby tendencies as she's still learning.

Both donkeys would do great in a home with other donkeys, or a horse or two as they've gotten along with all here at the rescue.

In Our Care

Maddie and Elmo are permanent residents of SYA. After being adopted out for the last time at nearly 30 and 40 years old we decided the universe was telling us they belong here. 

​

These two will be the first to greet you at the gate when you come to visit our Marlborough location, and follow you around wherever you go.

​

Elmo is the son of Maddie and is considered special needs at 28 years old. He has foundered in the past and requires a deep sand or shavings bed, and soft ride boots when needed. Elmo also is not an easy keeper of a donkey as most donkeys inherently are. Elmo does not have any grinding surface left for his molars to grind hay, so he needs a special mash diet in order for him to get the nutrients his body needs. He also gets an array of supplements and pain medication on occasion as he's being rehabbed. Elmo adores children and will go out of his way to visit kids and babies.

​

Maddie, is roughly 35 years old and is in great shape. This old lady is spry for her age and loves to kick up her heels still. Maddie like her son, adores everyone, but has a special liking for one of our volunteers named Janet who comes weekly to do chores. Maddie follows us around like a shadow weather were filling hay nets, raking pens, cleaning stalls, you can bet that Maddie will be right behind hoping to sneak in some ear rubs in between the work.
