What vaccinations should my donkey/mule have?

In New England, most veterinarians recommend vaccinating against tetanus, rabies, eastern and western equine encephalitis and West Nile virus. Due to your local conditions, your vet may recommend additional vaccinations, so please ask your vet what they recommend for your area. A Coggins test should be done every few years, please check with your vet/ state regulations to see how often you should have this blood test done.

Rabies vaccines are mandatory and should never be skipped. We do believe in vaccination and that it helps to protect our animals from unwanted injury and illness. Please talk with your veterinarian to see what vaccines he or she recommends for your area as they vary greatly.

Comments

For a donkeys social and behavioral needs to be properly met, donkeys need other donkeys as a companions. This is especially true for young donkeys who are still developing behaviorally. For this reason, we will not adopt out single donkeys unless they are going home to be with another donkey. Mules make great companions for horses and other mules but are not suitable companions for donkeys. Horses, goats sheep, and chickens are also not suitable companions for donkeys. Please keep this in mind when adopting a donkey.
